The Mediterranean Home: A Love of Beautiful, Everyday Things

Sunlit Mediterranean-style dining room with a rustic wooden table, olive branches, fresh lemons, green patterned ceramics and vintage glassware. Open arched doors lead to a leafy courtyard, creating a warm, relaxed interior inspired by Mediterranean living and natural textures.

Beautiful things, collected over time. A little colour, plenty of character and a home that feels like your own.

There's something about wandering into a little interiors shop on holiday that we absolutely love.

You know the ones. Tucked away down a side street, with baskets hanging outside, shelves full of pottery and all sorts of things you didn't know you needed until you spotted them. You tell yourself you're only having a look. Twenty minutes later, you're trying to work out how to get a rather large ceramic bowl home in your hand luggage.

We've all been there.

It's this kind of place that often comes to mind when we think about Mediterranean interiors. Beautiful everyday objects, interesting textures and things that have been collected over the years.

Nothing too precious. Nothing particularly perfect.

Just a home with a bit of personality.

A Little Bit of Everything

One of the things we love most about Mediterranean homes is how comfortably different styles can sit together.

An old wooden table with modern chairs. A vintage rug alongside contemporary furniture. Handmade pottery displayed next to everyday kitchen essentials. There's no need for everything to match.

In fact, some of the nicest homes we've visited have been a wonderful mixture of things picked up here and there.

Perhaps that's why we're so drawn to interiors that feel a little lived in. They tell you something about the people who live there.

And we'd always choose a home with character over one that looks like nobody's allowed to sit down.

The Things You Bring Home

We have a particular weakness for markets.

Whether it's a bustling souk in North Africa, a flea market in France or a little antique shop closer to home, there's something lovely about browsing without knowing what you might find. Sometimes you come away empty-handed. Other times you find something you'll keep for years.

A colourful glass, a woven basket or a piece of pottery that reminds you of a particular afternoon.

We like the idea of collecting things slowly, rather than buying everything for a room in one go.

And there's something quite satisfying about finding the perfect thing when you weren't really looking for it.

The Everyday Things

We've always thought that some of the nicest things in a home are the ones you actually use.

A favourite coffee cup. A wooden board that's been used for years. A beautiful serving dish that comes out whenever friends are over.

Across the Mediterranean, there's a wonderful tradition of craftsmanship in everyday objects. From the ceramics of Tunisia to the woven textiles of Morocco and the colourful glassware found in markets throughout the region.

We love that these things can be practical and beautiful at the same time. And while it's tempting to save your favourite pieces for special occasions, we're very much in favour of using them.

Even if it's just a Wednesday afternoon and you're having coffee on your own. Especially then, actually.

A Home With a Little Colour

We're rather fond of colour at Maison Kasbah.

Deep greens, faded blues, burgundy, warm whites. Colours that remind us of old shopfronts, painted doors, striped market awnings and the places we've visited. You don't need to paint an entire room to introduce a little colour.

Sometimes a striped cushion or an interesting piece of pottery is enough.

We love a neutral room with a few unexpected details. A dark green vase on a wooden shelf, a colourful print above the kitchen table or a vintage textile thrown over the back of a chair. It's often those smaller touches that make a space feel more personal.

Somewhere to Gather

Growing up around North African culture, hospitality was always a big part of home life. Someone would pop round and the kettle would go on. Before long, there would be coffee or tea on the table, usually accompanied by something to eat. You didn't need a special occasion or a perfectly tidy house.

It was simply what you did.

That feeling has always stayed with us, and it's something we wanted to bring to Sahara Café when we opened our first café in Norwich back in 2014. Somewhere people could meet, have a coffee and feel comfortable enough to stay a while. We think a home should feel much the same.

A place where people can pull up another chair, help themselves to something from the kitchen and settle in for a good conversation.

There's No Rush to Finish

It's easy to get carried away when decorating a home.

You see a beautiful room online and suddenly feel like everything in your own house needs replacing.

But we quite like the idea of a home that evolves over time. You might find a lovely old mirror at a car boot sale, bring back a cushion from your travels or finally get around to framing that print you've had sitting in a cupboard.

Some things stay with you for years. Others move around the house until you find the right spot.

And that's all part of it.

The nicest homes aren't necessarily the most expensive or the most beautifully styled.

They're the ones that feel like the people who live in them.

Make Yourself at Home

Perhaps that's what we love most about Mediterranean interiors. It's less about achieving a particular look and more about creating somewhere you genuinely enjoy spending time.

A comfortable chair by the window. Your favourite books within reach. A kitchen table that gets used for everything from breakfast to late-night conversations. And a few beautiful things you've collected along the way.

We think that's a pretty good place to start.
